It’s ridiculously easy for Toronto movie-goers to forget how fortunate they are, largely because of the Toronto International Film Festival. Sure, the T-dot has loads of other excellent festivals – Toronto After Dark, Hot Docs, Rendezvous with Madness, Reel Asian, etc etc – plus a healthy independent and repertory scene.
But year after year, TIFF brings the goods: a thrilling mix of Hollywood blockbusters, foreign-language gems, directorial debuts, offbeat conceptual pieces and a whack of other stuff all eagerly seeking distribution, advance word-of-mouth, press attention or some combination of the three.
A recent piece in industry bible the Hollywood Reporter notes that quite often, finished films playing the festival circuit are delayed going into wide release - sometimes by as much as a year or two - because of distribution humps, scheduling conflicts or some other snag. But that doesn’t mean they’re not worth seeing when they finally open.
Here at inMovies, we are doubly blessed: based in Toronto and granted access to TIFF, thereby able to catch stuff before the general public can (unless you bought tickets to TIFF, of course). This year, a number of terrific films premiered at TIFF that haven’t yet opened wide but should sometime in 2012.
These are the films we’re most psyched to finally see at the megaplex… and think you will be, too. (Click the film titles to see our TIFF reviews)
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen Director Lasse Hallstrom’s offbeat comedy tells the story of a snobbish fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) approached by an Arab sheik wanting the impossible: British salmon, which live in cold water, to thrive the desert valleys of Yemen. Co-starring Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas.
Fate, according to The Hollywood Reporter: CBS Films acquired the film's U.S. distribution rights in September, following a bidding war just before the close of the Toronto fest, and plans to release it theatrically March 9.
Take This Waltz Actress-cum-director Sarah Polley ably demonstrated that her acclaimed 2006 directorial debut, Away from Her, was no fluke, filing this tender but bittersweet tale of a woman (the incomparable Michelle Williams) torn between her sweet-natured husband (Seth Rogen) and smokin’ hot new neighbor (Luke Kirby). Filmed on location in Toronto, the film is also Polley’s love letter to her hometown.
Fate, according to THR: Magnolia acquired the film's U.S. distribution rights in October and plans to release it theatrically in early-summer 2012.
Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding A fantastic, female-heavy cast - including Jane Fonda as a hippie mom, Catherine Keener as her uptight daughter and outstanding newcomer Elizabeth Olsen as the granddaughter somewhere in between - power this Bruce Beresford-directed, pan-generational family dramedy about, well, peace love and misunderstanding.
Fate, according to THR: IFC acquired the film's U.S. distribution rights in December and plans to release it in 2012.
Butter A comedy about the white-knuckle world of professional butter carving doesn’t come along every day, so anyone seeking something truly left-field will want to keep an eye out for this film, which stars Jennifer Garner.
Fate, according to THR: It's scheduled for release March 16.
360 This film - which explores the complexities of sexual relationships between people of different social classes - reteams Rachel Weisz with director Fernando Meirelles, who led her to an Oscar for 2005’s The Constant Gardener. Also starring Anthony Hopkins and Jude Law.
Fate, according to THR: Magnolia acquired the film's U.S. distribution rights in October and plans to release it in 2012.
Twixt Any film by Francis Ford Coppola turns heads, especially one as angular as this one, which features Val Kilmer as an also-ran author who arrives in a small town as part of a book tour and gets caught up in a murder mystery involving a young girl. An unhinged Bruce Dern and Elle Fanning support.
Fate, according to THR: Still seeking U.S. distribution.
Barrymore Awesome octogenarian Christopher Plummer reprises the stage role that won him a Tony for best actor 15 years ago; a one-man film chronicling the career of legendary thespian John Barrymore.
Fate, according to THR: Still seeking U.S. distribution.
