Hilary Swank and Jon Bon Jovi on the set of ‘New Year’s Eve,’ courtesy the Canadian Press.

Question: Which new movie features a marquee cast including, but not limited to, Halle Berry, Ashton Kutcher, Zac Efron, Katherine Heigl, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Sarah Jessica Parker, Abigail Breslin, Josh Duhamel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Alyssa Milano and still looks terrible?

Answer: New Year’s Eve, the forthcoming (December 9) ensemble rom-com centered, 200 Cigarettes-like, on the shenanigans of crazy people in love on the last day of the year.

New Year’s Eve was  directed by Garry Marshall, which means things could go either way; he’s done good stuff (Pretty Woman, Beaches) and really, really, really bad stuff (Exit to Eden, Overboard).

The trailer, which is almost aggressively buoyant  (does anyone really want to see Hilary Swank in a smiley-happy lather?) also seems to solidify the truism that Hollywood is no place for women over 40. How else to explain Michelle Pfeiffer, foxy still and an amazing actress, being willfully upstaged by a former member of High School Musical?

Kind of breaks your heart. On the plus side, New Year’s Eve will provide a cinematic respite from all the heavy stuff (Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus, Shame with Michael Fassbender, Japanese underworld movie Outrage, controversial Aussie flick Sleeping Beauty, Tinker Tailor Solider Spy) destined for theatres next month.

Check out the trailer and have your say. Will you go see New Year’s Eve… or save the admission price for a better bottle of bubbly?

Hollywood is old in it's thinking and target's certain people (who spends the money on crap with star worship). It creates a film of "their" own idea of who is watchable in "THEIR" world...Isolation from the real world and who inhabits it...Then they recycle the same tired scripts with the same actors and actresses...Everybody involved is forced to just get the money....In reality it's the viewers fault. If you want to spend your money watching some of these dead end actors and actresses play in stupid plots and writers "forced" to write them, so be it....That's why there's pirate bay...A revolt by the people and they are not just Americans....And not just "certain" American's..The fact that you can see a movie and if's its bad you don't spend your hard earned money to pay all the overpaid players

I LOVE Overboard - and will pit my IQ against LoveMousecatcher's any day!Seriously, where do you get off - and WHY do you get off - making that kind of unneccessary judegment?

Anyone who enjoys 'Overboard' has to be an idiot!

Maybe, TonyP (or should I call you Fred Flinstone) you SHOULD listen to the critics.

Never gone by a movie critic's opinion, they are windbags. If I want an award winning movie I will watch one, if I want something entertaining to me and the family like Overboard I will watch it.
You will miss all the good movies if you do.

@Tea Rose: Lea was wonderful in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. She's really quite talented.

I don't know - Valentine's Day was not that bad, so maybe this will be somewhat watchable? However, unless you're looking for a dark place and a fluffy background movie to make out to, I think it might be safe to assume that this movie is a renter.

As an asside - here's hoping that Lea Michelle will prove that she's more than just a one note (and if she does turn out to be as unbearable as her Glee - Rachael Berry character, here's hoping she has limited screen time!)

Couldn't pay me enough to watch a movie with "dirt bag" Kutcher in it....go back tothe 70's....however the trailer looks alright, in a chick flicky sort of way.

It doesn't matter WHO'S in the movie!!! Even the best actors can't do anything with a bad script, or Director ( can you say Uwe Bolle)! Most actors are smart enough to turn down a movie if they don't think it's right for them; unless they are desperate!

LoL! Well said Marky-Mark. Bang on.

I totally agree with Marky-mark.
Robert

Since when is Overboard a really really bad movie?? Love that movie! I always watch it when it's on TV. Have to disagree with you on that one.

It looks good to me too! We can't agree with every reviewer or review, nor can every reviewer speak for the entire movie-going public. I usually take reviewers comments in stride and just make up my own mind to see a movie or not. My own intuition based on trailers has rarely been wrong.

I will probably see it and love it. However, I have a feeling that the Brits would probably pull it off better, a la "Love Actually"

I love how people make comments about movies with out actually seeing them. I love how you were able to assume all this from watching the trailer and thend want the rest of us to do the same.

Here's what I am going to do. I have only read one article from you but I am going to assume you're an idiot because of it.
