The next time you're on an Air Canada flight, you might get more with your in-flight entertainment than you bargained for.

Air Canada's enRoute Film Festival yesterday announced it will showcase emerging Canadian short film talent on Air Canada flights around the world from August to November. All 12 selected shorts will compete for awards for Best Short Film, and Achievement in Direction, Cinematography and Animation.

Cool huh? And that ain't all. According to a press release issued yesterday, "Millions of Air Canada passengers will be able to view the selected short films on their personal entertainment system with 8.9-inch wide digital in-seat monitors and touch-screen controls offering hours of audio and video-on-demand programming at every seat."

A snazzy, star-powered jury will select the winners, each of whom will receive an all-inclusive trip for two to the Whistler Film Festival courtesy of Air Canada. The grand prize winner will also receive $5,000 courtesy of presenting sponsor Cineplex.

This year's jurors include:

  • Alan Cumming, actor/director
  • Carlo Rota, actor
  • Denis Villeneuve, director
  • Jason Priestley, actor/director
  • Jeremy Podeswa, director
  • Kari Skogland, director
  • Sheila McCarthy, actor

A free public screening will take place at Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre on October 13, followed by an awards celebration at The Drake Hotel. For news on the festival and film profiles, please visit www.enroutefilm.com.
